Nordkalk FW 325

Generic Family: Filler / Reinforcement -- WollastoniteSupplied by: Nordkalk Corporation
Wollastonite CaSiO3

Wollastonite is a natural calcium silicate mineral with the molecular formula CaSiO3. It has been named after William Hyde Wollaston, the English chemist and mineralogist, who discovered the mineral in the late 1700‘s. Wollastonite has been formed in metamorphosis reaction between limestone and quartz. The reaction has been as follows: CaCO3 + SiO2 -> CaSiO3 + CO2. Wollastonite is the only naturally occurring white and acicular mineral. Wollastonite is mainly used as source of CaO in ceramics and metallurgical powders, and as reinforcing filler in plastics, paints & coatings and friction materials.

Nordkalk wollastonite

Nordkalk Corporation is the leading producer of high quality limestone-based products and wollastonite in Northern Europe. All Nordkalk wollastonite products are mined and processed in Lappeenranta, Finland. Nordkalk is the only wollastonite producer that holds it's own raw material resource for this mineral in the EU-area. Nordkalk purifies the raw material in unique chemical flotation process where calcite and the gangue are removed from wollastonite. This process makes the end product very high and stable in quality and therefore they are well known and respected in the global market.

Wicroll 40 wollastonite

Nordkalk Wicroll 40 wollastonite is a medium aspect ratio grade. It is used as reinforcing filler in thermoplastics and thermosets as well as in paints & coatings. Wicroll 40 is also available with variety of surface treatments to enhance the interactions between the filler and the resin.

Wollastonite offers unique features for plastic and rubber compounding. Due to combination of acicular particle structure, high whiteness, small and controlled particle size, high and stable purity, and engineered surface treatments, wollastonite can take part in providing the following properties into plastic and rubber compounds;
  • High flexural and tensile modulus and strength
  • Weight reduction
  • High impact strength
  • Low shrinkage
  • Low thermal expansion
  • Low warpage
  • Excellent surface quality
  • High scratch & mar resistance
  • Excellent paintability and coatability
  • Low moisture absorption
  • Good electrical insulation properties
  • Non toxic
  • Cost efficiency
